[2026] Jeju Rental Car Insurance: I Almost Paid $500 for a Tiny Scratch

Let me tell you a story about how I almost ruined my Jeju Island vacation over a tiny, barely-visible scratch on a Kia Morning bumper.

I thought I was smart. I booked my rental car online, saw that “CDW” (Collision Damage Waiver) was included, and thought I was fully covered. I was completely wrong. If you’re renting a car in Jeju, grab a coffee and read this, because the rental insurance system here works very differently than what you might be used to back home.

The “Included CDW” Trap

Here’s the harsh reality: the basic CDW that comes free with your Jeju rental does not mean you pay nothing if you damage the car. It just caps your maximum liability.

If you scrape a wall on one of Jeju’s notoriously narrow mountain roads, you are still on the hook for the “deductible” (called jagibudamgeum in Korean). For most economy cars, this is a flat 300,000 to 700,000 KRW (roughly $220 to $500 USD). And yes, they will charge you that full amount even for a small dent.

Why You Must Buy “Full Coverage” (완전자차)

When you get to the rental counter at Jeju Airport, they’re going to try to upsell you to Full Coverage (wanjeon-jacha). Normally, I ignore these upsells. But in Jeju? Take it. Take it every single time.

For an extra $10-$15 a day, your deductible drops to absolute zero. When I returned my car with a mysterious scratch on the passenger door (I swear it happened in a parking lot while I was eating black pork), the inspector just saw “Full Coverage” on my contract, waved his hand, and said “Okay, bye!” No paperwork, no stress, no missing my flight while arguing over repair costs.

Insider Warnings No One Tells You

Even with Full Coverage, there are loopholes you need to know:

• Tires and Wheels aren’t covered: If you hit a curb and pop a tire or scratch the rim, you’re paying for it out of pocket. Period. Watch out for those jagged lava rocks near the coastal cafes.
• You need the physical IDP: Don’t just bring your home driver’s license. You need the physical International Driving Permit booklet. I saw a guy getting denied his rental because he only had a photo of his IDP on his phone.
• The Gas Game: They use a full-to-full policy. If you return it without a full tank, they will charge you a massive premium per liter. Fill up at the GS Caltex near the airport right before you drop it off.

Take it from me: the peace of mind of Full Coverage on Jeju’s windy, scooter-filled, tourist-packed roads is worth its weight in gold. Just pay the extra 15 bucks.
