The “Ocean View” Trap (Zone A: The Beachfront)
Everyone wants to walk out of their lobby and immediately step onto the sand. The beachfront strip (what I call Zone A) has the big 5-star names and the direct ocean views.
But here’s the harsh reality: during the peak season from mid-July to late August, these hotels will ruthlessly hike their prices by 100% to 200%. A perfectly nice 3-star room that costs ₩100,000 ($74) in May will suddenly demand ₩350,000 ($260) in late July. And that “Ocean View” premium? You’re paying an extra ₩30,000 to ₩80,000 a night just to look at the water. If the weather is foggy or rainy—which happens often in summer—you just paid a massive premium to stare at a grey cloud. Plus, beachfront rooms can be surprisingly noisy until midnight thanks to buskers and tourists on the promenade.
My Ultimate Hack: The BEXCO Area (Zone B)
If you want my genuine advice? Stay in the BEXCO convention area. I know it sounds boring, but hear me out.
It’s literally one subway stop away or a breezy 10-minute walk to the sand. By staying just slightly inland, you can get a fantastic 3-star or 4-star room for ₩70,000 to ₩150,000 ($52 to $111). You save 30% to 50% compared to the beachfront, the neighborhood is significantly quieter, and you still have incredibly easy access to the beach and the subway line. This is the ultimate value play.
The High-Roller Option: Marine City (Zone C)
If you have the budget and want to feel like a billionaire, skip the crowded beachfront and head to Marine City. These are premium high-rise condotels. You’re trading direct sand access (it’s about a 15-minute walk to the beach) for jaw-dropping, sweeping panoramic views of the ocean and the Gwangan Bridge. Rates here usually float between ₩130,000 and ₩500,000 depending on the season, but the vibe is way more upscale and less chaotic.
Food & Transport Realities
Don’t expect to just casually grab dinner right on the beach at 7 PM in August. The popular joints will have you queuing for an hour. Do what the locals do: walk 5 minutes inland to the Haeundae Traditional Market. You can gorge on fresh seafood pancakes and blood sausage for a fraction of the cost of the tourist traps. Or, head to the Millak Raw Fish Center, buy your fish on the ground floor, and take it upstairs to eat.
Getting there from Seoul is easy enough via the KTX (around 2 hours 15 minutes to Busan Station, then a 40-minute subway ride to Haeundae). But please, book your summer hotel at least 2 to 3 months in advance. Last-minute summer Haeundae bookings are a financial death wish.
