💡 Quick Summary

Skip the standard BBQ joints. Hanwoo omakase is the pinnacle of Korean luxury dining. Here is how to navigate reservations, what to expect, and my top picks in Cheongdam and Gangnam.

Don’t get me wrong, I love a loud, smoky, chaotic Korean BBQ joint where you are grilling pork belly over charcoal on a tin barrel. (I even wrote a whole Korean BBQ and street food guide about it).

But if you want to experience the absolute pinnacle of culinary luxury in Seoul, you need to book a Hanwoo beef omakase in Cheongdam or Gangnam. To be completely honest with you, eating 1++ grade Hanwoo ruined Japanese Wagyu for me. It has the intense marbling of Wagyu, but with a much deeper, earthier beef flavor that doesn’t overwhelm your palate after three bites.

What Actually is a Hanwoo Omakase?

It’s exactly what it sounds like. You sit at an intimate, dimly lit counter, and a personal chef grills various cuts of ultra-premium Korean beef right in front of you.

It is not just a plate of meat. You are getting 10 to 12 courses. Think truffle-topped Hanwoo yukhoe (beef tartare), caviar-crowned tenderloin, palate-cleansing cold noodles, and a rich brisket soybean paste stew to finish.

Beware of the “Instagram Traps”

While I was skeptical at first of the hype, the real problem is that the market is currently saturated with “affordable” omakase spots trying to cater to the Instagram crowd.

Do not book a 70,000 KRW Hanwoo omakase. I promise you, they are cutting corners. The beef will be chewy, the service will be rushed (usually capping you at exactly 60 minutes), and you’ll leave disappointed.

If you are going to do this, you need to go all the way. You should expect to spend between 150,000 to 250,000 KRW ($110 - $190 USD) per person.

My Top Recommendation: Born & Bred

Located in Majang-dong (Seoul’s famous meat market district, though they have a speakeasy-style high-end venue), Born & Bred is arguably the Godfather of Hanwoo omakase.

Getting a reservation here as a foreigner can be incredibly difficult because they mostly use the CatchTable app (which requires a Korean phone number).

Pro-tip: If you don’t have a Korean number, ask your luxury hotel concierge to book it for you at least 3 weeks in advance.
